New Orleans' Mardi Gras celebration started Jan. 6, and with Fat Tuesday approaching March 5, it's a perfect time to visit NOLA Doughnuts. The New Orleans-style bakery and café has locations in Lake Oswego and the Pearl District, where it serves beignets and New Orleans-style donuts. All donuts are made over three days using classic French pastry techniques. In honor of upcoming Mardi Gras festivities, NOLA will bake traditional Louisiana-style King Cake for Carnival. The cake is covered in purple, green and gold sugar, and the small baby (the little trinket that bestows a kind of luck) is served on the side. Allow three days for all your King Cake orders.

Lake Oswego, Eat, Play & Shop

The tranquility of rural farmland meets sophisticated shopping and tasty eats in this Portland suburb. Follow the Willamette River south, past Portland State University and Lewis & Clark College, and you'll eventually reach the sylvan hills of Lake Oswego. In the early days — back when it was a humble assemblage of iron smelters, lumberyards and homesteaders — travelers could only reach Lake Oswego via the lazy river or bumpy dirt roads. Perhaps that's why, though only 20 minutes from downtown Portland, the city still feels a world away. Start your day at NOLA Doughnuts, armed with a chicory coffee and a beignet piled so high with powdered sugar that it resembles Mount Hood. If the French Quarter isn't French enough for you ...

This year has been an excellent one, and there's no doubt that I've eaten way too much good food for it be easy to narrow my list down to just five. But I've done it ...

A taste of New Orleans comes to Lake Oswego

Why NOLA? Because that is what in New Orleans folks call New Orleans, which happens to be the hometown of DeMerell and her brothers Robert Herkes and Stephan Kuhn. They are now happily transplanted Oregonians, but they want to bring New Orleans culture to Lake Oswego, starting, of course, with their doughnuts. While still living in New Orleans, Herkes became inspired to make a great doughnut. Herkes said, "I wanted to create something from scratch that I could give to people, see their reaction and make them happy."

Farmers Market Vendor Spotlight, NOLA Doughnuts

Our flagship product is the La'ssant. It consists of our laminated dough, which is fried, gently rolled in fine sugar, and topped with high quality glazes and toppings made fresh daily. Our fritters are created by slicing the La'ssant dough and mixing it with seasonal fruits, spices, and herbs. They are then fried to a dark golden brown, leading to it's crunchy texture. Our Bites are created from the holes when cutting the La'ssants. We then toss these in sugar and spices. Currently we serve our Cinnamon Sugar Bites and Mocha Bites ...
